Ages 5 to 11
Tumbling basics
A first class for rolls, bridges and cartwheels, built from games, mats and a turn across the floor.
Students warm up with a game, practice a skill at each mat station and take a turn across the floor, one at a time, with a coach beside them. Nobody is asked to hurry a skill. Families of ages 5 to 7 wait on the bench in the front hall, which has a window onto the mat room.
Ages 5 to 7 and ages 8 to 11, in their own classes
45 minutes for ages 5 to 7, 60 minutes for 8 and up
Classes of up to 6 for ages 5 to 7, and up to 8 for ages 8 to 11
The mat room

What a class is like
- 01
Step 1: Hello and a game
Students walk in, put their bags in the cubbies and start with a movement game that warms up the arms and legs.
- 02
Step 2: Wrist and shoulder prep
A few holds and rocks on the mats get hands and shoulders ready for the work.
- 03
Step 3: Skill stations
Two or three mats, each with one skill. A coach moves between them and spots the new one by hand.
- 04
Step 4: Across the floor
One at a time, students take a turn along the floor with the skill they are working on.
- 05
Step 5: Cool-down
A slow stretch, a look at what we did, and a wave to the grown-up at the door.
What to wear and bring
A fitted top with shorts or leggings, so a coach can see the shape of a skill.
On the mats
Bare feet or grip socks work on the mats, and shoes stay in the hall.
Hair and jewelry
Hair is tied back and off the face, and jewelry stays at home.
In the bag
A water bottle with a closing lid. Nothing loose over the top: it rides up in a handstand.
Levels and your coach
- Level
Rolls and bridges, then Cartwheels
Students begin in Rolls and bridges and move to Cartwheels when each roll is smooth and the bridge holds without a spot. There is no test and no timeline.
